What Causes Receding Gums? (…and how to prevent gum disease!)

A Simple Guide on Receding gums and how to prevent it.

What Causes Receding Gums?

Receding gums, also known as gingival recession, occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or its root. This can lead to sensitivity, increased risk of decay, and aesthetic concerns.

Here are the main causes of receding gums:

Poor Oral Hygiene

•   Plaque Buildup: Not brushing and flossing regularly allows plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, to accumulate on teeth and gums. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar, which irritates and inflames the gums, causing them to recede.

•   Gum Disease: Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are major causes of gum recession. These conditions are caused by bacterial infections that destroy gum tissue and the supporting bone.

Aggressive Brushing

•   Harsh Technique: Brushing too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can wear down the enamel on your teeth and cause gums to recede. It’s important to use a soft-bristled brush and gentle, circular motions.

Genetics

•   Family History: Some people are more susceptible to gum recession due to their genetic makeup. If gum disease runs in your family, you may be at higher risk, even with good oral hygiene.

Tobacco Use

•   Smoking and Chewing: Tobacco products are harmful to oral health. Smoking and chewing tobacco can damage your gums, leading to gum disease and recession.

Hormonal Changes

•   Fluctuations in Hormones: Changes in hormone levels, especially in women during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can make gums more sensitive and vulnerable to recession.

Teeth Grinding and Clenching

•   Bruxism: Clenching or grinding your teeth, often while sleeping, puts excessive force on the teeth, which can cause gums to recede. A mouthguard can help protect your teeth and gums.

Misaligned Teeth

•   Crowded or Crooked Teeth: Misalignment can put extra pressure on certain areas of your gums and bone, causing them to wear away over time.

Lip or Tongue Piercings

•   Jewellery Irritation: Metal jewellery can rub against the gums, irritating and wearing away the gum tissue, leading to recession (Elegant Themes).

Preventing and Treating Receding Gums

1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss regularly.

2. Regular Dental Visits: Regular check-ups and professional cleanings can catch early signs of gum problems.

3. Avoid Tobacco: Quit smoking and avoid using tobacco products.

4. Use a Mouthguard: If you grind or clench your teeth, consider using a mouthguard at night.

5. Gentle Brushing: Use gentle brushing techniques to avoid damaging your gums.

Consult your dentist if you notice signs of gum recession, such as tooth sensitivity or visible roots. Early intervention can help prevent further recession and protect your oral health.
